Chris Froome and his fellow Briton Geraint Thomas will pay their total attention and focus on Tour de France and for that purpose Chris Froome will skip Giro d’Italia.
Chris Froome, 33-years-old, is focusing on becoming the only 5th rider to win 5 Tours, while Welsh Team Sky team-mate Thomas,32-years-old, for the 1st time won the race in 2018.
Team Sky will be led by Egan Bernal, the 21-years-old Colombian, at the Giro in May.
Skipping the Giro race is not an easy decision for me, it’s really a difficult one, said Froome.
He said: “It’s been a hard decision to figure out exactly what to do in 2019 and figure out which Grand Tours to focus on, especially having won the Giro last year and having had such an amazing time out there with the team – but for 2019, my number one objective is going to be the Tour de France.
“It was definitely a difficult decision not to go back to the Giro d’Italia and defend the maglia rosa. I’ve got some amazing memories from last year, but I think, with the Tour de France as my main objective, it’s probably better that I skip the Giro d’Italia in 2019,” said Froome.
“I’m getting to the point in my career now where I’m starting to think about what kind of legacy I want to leave behind and if I am able to win the Tour de France for a fifth time and join that very elite group of bike riders – only four other people have ever done that – it would just be incredible.”
Giro d’Italia – is the first one among the 3 Grand Tours of the year – starts from 11-May to 02-June, and the Tour from 06-July to 28-July.
The 33-years-old has won Giro d’Italia race for the 1st time in the year 2018, thanks to an eye-catching 80kilometer alone breakaway on stage nineteen.
Chris Froome, who is a 2-times Olympic bronze medallist, will begin his season of 2019 at the Tour Colombia prior to his UAE Tour, and is also expected to ride for the first time the Tour de Yorkshire.
“My race programme next year is going to be a little different,” said Froome.
“Later in the year I’ve potentially got the Tour de Yorkshire on my programme. I’d love to race more in the UK.”
Froome started the Tour of 2018 as the boss of Team Sky, but finished it riding with the support of Thomas after his fellow showed to be more powerful.
In September Thomas will going to perform in the Road World Championships in Yorkshire.
“The main goal for me will be to go back to the Tour de France for the best result I can,” said Thomas.
“Maybe if I hadn’t have won the Tour in 2018 I might have looked at a Giro/Vuelta programme but, having won the Tour, I’ll have the number one on my back and it would be sad not to go back and not to go back at 100% as well.”
The seasons last Grand Tour, Vuelta a Espana, starts from 24th of August to 15th of September.
Bernal was the winner of the Tour of California, that was his 1st season at World Tour level in May and performed at the Tour de France as a domestique for Thomas and Froome.
“The Giro is a race that I really, really like,” Bernal said.
“I lived in Italy for three years, so I have a lot of friends there and I really like the Italian fans. I know the roads, I really like the Giro, and I want to do a good race there.”
Simon Yates from Britain, who was leading thirteen stages of the 2018 Giro before he lose the lead to Froome, he told few days ago in December that he wants to “end the job off” in 2019.
